A first-round pass rusher the game barely bothered to grade

Todd Kelly was a first-round pass rusher who never got home. A first-team All-American at Tennessee with 22.5 college sacks, he went 27th overall to San Francisco in 1993 with the job of getting after quarterbacks, and managed only a handful of sacks before the 49ers gave up on him. He was on the roster for the Super Bowl XXIX title in 1994, and then he was gone.

Madden barely rated him at all, which suits a first-rounder who did so little. The game lists him without a real overall in his 1993 rookie card, on the old scale, and gives him only a 66 for the 1995 season, by which point he had moved on to Cincinnati. Two thin cards for a player drafted to be a cornerstone, the numbers as underwhelming as the production.

Kelly finished with around five and a half sacks across four seasons for three teams and turns up today on lists of the franchise's draft busts. The pass-rush talent that made him a first-round pick in college never translated, and the game, which loves a good edge rusher, had almost nothing to give him. Sometimes the low grade is simply the right one.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
