Dave Waymer was born on July 1, 1958 in Brooklyn, New York, grew up in Charlotte, North Carolina, and played college football at Notre Dame, where he was part of the 1977 national championship team. The New Orleans Saints drafted him in the second round, 41st overall, in 1980.

Waymer spent ten seasons in New Orleans and intercepted 37 passes there. He was selected to the Pro Bowl and named second-team All-Pro for the 1987 season. He signed with San Francisco for 1990, starting nine games in the secondary, and started 15 at strong safety in 1991. Madden NFL 92 put him at a calculated 99 for that 1991 season, the only Madden rating of his career and a product of the game's early attribute scale rather than a stored overall.

He played 16 games for the Los Angeles Raiders in 1992 and retired after that season with 48 career interceptions across 13 years. Waymer died on April 30, 1993, at the age of 34, of a heart attack induced by cocaine use. The New Orleans Saints inducted him into their team Hall of Fame in 1996.
