One healthy year, one Madden card

Kevin Lewis was an undrafted corner out of Northwestern State who caught on with San Francisco in 1990 and had one real NFL season. In 1991 he played all sixteen games, started three, and intercepted a pair of passes, useful depth on a good defense. A year on injured reserve in 1992 effectively ended it, and that was the career.

Madden made a single card of him, a 63 for that 1991 season, the one year he was healthy and on the field enough to be noticed. The number is unremarkable by design, a depth cornerback's grade, with an awareness rating of 20 that tells you the game had barely heard of him. There was nothing else to rate; his NFL life was essentially that one season.

Lewis intercepted three passes in his brief time in the league and never won a title. He is exactly the player who fills out the back of a roster and disappears from memory, and the sort this project is meant to catch. One healthy year, one Madden card, one line in the record book, which for a lot of men who reach the NFL at all is more than they ever get.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
