Ninth-round Colts linebacker who led the NFL in tackles in 1994

Jeff Herrod was born on July 29, 1966 in Birmingham, Alabama, played college football at Ole Miss, and was drafted by the Indianapolis Colts in the ninth round, 243rd overall, in 1988. He left Oxford with 528 tackles, still the Ole Miss record and second on the Southeastern Conference career list. He led the Colts in tackles in seven of the eight seasons from 1989 through 1996.

Herrod started 14 games in 1991, and Madden NFL 92 listed him at a calculated 79 for that season. He led the NFL in combined tackles in 1994, a year Indianapolis credited him with 200, and Madden NFL 95 put him at a calculated 82 for that season. Madden NFL 97 listed him at a stored 90 for 1996, the highest figure in his rating history and his last year of a nine-season first stint with the Colts.

Indianapolis released him after 1996. He played 10 games for Philadelphia in 1997, then returned to the Colts in 1998 and started seven of the 10 games he appeared in; Madden NFL 99 put him at a calculated 88 for that season. He was unofficially credited with 1,443 tackles as a Colt, the most in franchise history, and finished his career with 14.5 sacks and five interceptions. Herrod was inducted into the Alabama Sports Hall of Fame in 2017 and the Mississippi Sports Hall of Fame in 2023.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
