Eric Dickerson: 2,105 Rushing Yards in 1984, Hall of Fame 1999

Eric Dickerson was born on September 2, 1960 in Sealy, Texas. He played college football at SMU, earning unanimous All-American honors in 1982, and the Los Angeles Rams took him second overall in the 1983 NFL draft. He rushed for 1,808 yards as a rookie and was named Offensive Rookie of the Year.

He set the NFL single-season rushing record in 1984, carrying 379 times for 2,105 yards. He led the league in rushing in 1983, 1984, 1986 and 1988, won AP Offensive Player of the Year in 1986, and reached 10,000 career rushing yards in his 91st game. A three-team trade sent him to the Indianapolis Colts in 1987, and he was a first-team All-Pro there in 1988.

Contract disputes and suspensions shortened his final Colts seasons, and Madden NFL 92 listed him at a calculated 56 for the 1991 season, when he ran for 536 yards. Indianapolis traded him to the Los Angeles Raiders on April 26, 1992; he led that team in rushing, and Madden NFL 93 put him at a calculated 62 for the year. He played four games for Atlanta in 1993 and retired with 13,259 rushing yards and 90 touchdowns. Dickerson was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1999.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
