The wide back who ran for eight touchdowns from the slot
San Francisco drafted Deebo Samuel in the second round, 36th overall, out of South Carolina in 2019, and Kyle Shanahan turned him into something the league had not filed under a position. In 2021 Samuel caught 77 passes for 1,405 yards and six scores while also carrying the ball for 365 rushing yards and eight rushing touchdowns, the most ever by a receiver in a season, and he made first-team All-Pro. He called himself a 'wide back,' and the name stuck. He caught three balls in the overtime loss to Kansas City in Super Bowl LVIII, then was traded to Washington in March 2025 for a fifth-round pick.
Madden logged the transformation. Samuel opened as a 71 in the 2019 edition, climbed to 82 by the 2021 game, and hit 89 in both the 2022 and 2023 editions after the All-Pro year. The number eased to 83 by the 2025 edition as the mileage from all that contact began to show.
