Iowa's Mackey winner who rewrote the tight end debut
T.J. Hockenson announced himself immediately. In his very first NFL game, September 8, 2019 against Arizona, he caught six passes for 131 yards and a touchdown, the most receiving yards a tight end had ever posted in a debut. The Lions had spent the eighth overall pick on him that spring, drawn to the polish that made him the 2018 John Mackey Award winner at Iowa, the first sophomore ever to take it.
He made the Pro Bowl after the 2020 season, then again in 2022, the year Detroit surprisingly traded him within the division to Minnesota for a package of picks. He kept producing for the Vikings and signed a four-year, $63.5 million extension in 2023 before a torn ACL and MCL that December interrupted the climb. As a receiver from the tight end spot, there are few cleaner route runners.
Madden followed the production. He debuted at 77 in the 2019 edition, rose with his target share, and hit a career-best 91 in the 2024 game before settling to an 88 the next year.
