Tavon Austin was born on March 15, 1990 in Baltimore, Maryland, and played at Dunbar High School before four years at West Virginia, where he was a first-team All-American in 2011 and 2012 and won the 2012 Paul Hornung Award. The Rams traded up from the 16th pick to take him eighth overall in 2013, and Madden NFL 25 rated him 76.

At Indianapolis on November 10, 2013 he caught two passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns and returned a punt 98 yards for a third score, and he was named NFC Special Teams Player of the Week. His 391 punt-return yards in 2014 ranked third in the NFL, a season Madden NFL 15 rated 78. He set career highs in 2015 with 52 catches for 473 yards and five touchdowns, plus 434 rushing yards and four scores, and Madden NFL 16 rated him 75.

He signed a four-year, $42 million extension in August 2016 and caught 58 passes for 509 yards that season, which Madden NFL 17 rated 80. His production fell to 13 catches for 47 yards in 2017, and Dallas acquired him in April 2018 for a sixth-round pick. He spent two seasons there, then played for Green Bay in 2020 and Jacksonville in 2021, finishing with 2,239 receiving yards, 1,361 rushing yards and three punt-return touchdowns. He announced his retirement in August 2024.
