A 328-pound nose tackle nobody could move off the ball
He won a state shot put title in high school and carried that leverage into the NFL, a 6-4, 328-pound wall in the middle. The Giants drafted him in the second round in 2010 out of East Carolina, and as a rookie contributor he won a ring in Super Bowl XLVI, when New York beat New England 21-17. In 2014 he signed with Minnesota and became a genuine force, earning Pro Bowl nods after the 2016 and 2017 seasons and even rumbling 65 yards for a touchdown off a loose ball in 2018.
He kept finding work well into his thirties, with stops in Los Angeles, Philadelphia, Buffalo, and Dallas, and finished with 695 tackles and 28.5 sacks from the interior. In 2014 he was hit in the calf by a stray bullet at a Minneapolis nightclub, an injury that proved minor.
Madden logged the growth from raw rookie to anchor. He sat at 69 in the 2010 and 2011 editions, jumped to 82 once he broke through, and topped out at a 90 in the 2018 edition before the number eased down as the miles added up.
