The Iowa tackle machine who never left Minnesota
Chad Greenway's NFL career nearly ended before it began. The 17th overall pick out of Iowa in 2006, he tore the ACL in his left knee on a preseason kickoff and missed his entire rookie year. He came back to play 10 more seasons, all in Minnesota, and piled up more than 1,297 tackles as the constant in the middle of the Vikings defense.
He made the Pro Bowl after the 2011 and 2012 seasons and earned second-team All-Pro honors, but his reputation outgrew the box score. Greenway won the Alan Page Community Award and was a repeat Vikings Man of the Year, his foundation reaching hundreds of thousands of people in the Twin Cities.
Madden charted the whole run. He opened at 82 in the 2006 edition despite the lost rookie season, dipped to 79, then built steadily to a career-high 90 in the 2011 game as he became the face of the front seven. He held in the high 80s for a couple more editions before drifting to 78 by the 2016 version, his final year.
