A UTEP linebacker who covered like a safety
Thomas Howard ran like a defensive back inside a linebacker's frame, and the tape backed it up: six interceptions in 2007, two returned for touchdowns, from the weakside spot in Oakland's defense. UTEP produced him, the Raiders took him 38th overall in the 2006 draft, and his range in coverage made him a bright spot on some rough Oakland teams.
He spent five seasons with the Raiders and two more in Cincinnati, finishing with seven interceptions, two defensive touchdowns, and 392 tackles across 95 games. Howard died in a car accident in Oakland in November 2013 at the age of 30.
The ratings caught his ascent cleanly: a 77 in the 2006 edition as a rookie, a jump to 82 the next year, and a career-high 91 in the 2008 game after the six-pick season, before the number drifted back down as he moved teams.
