Carolina used the 234th pick, deep in the seventh round of the 2006 draft, on a Virginia Tech lineman most teams had written off as a career backup. Montgomery proved patient. After stops with the Panthers and Jets, he settled in Washington and turned himself into a starting center, playing every snap in 2012 as Robert Griffin III and rookie Alfred Morris drove the team to the NFC East title. Across ten seasons he appeared in 110 games with 75 starts, most of them at center but with time at both guard spots.

The Madden ratings tell the story of a late bloomer. He sat at a 63 in the 2011 edition, jumped to a 79 in 2012, then peaked at a 90 in 2013 after that every-down season in the middle of Washington's line. He later served as a veteran presence for Denver in 2014 and Chicago in 2015 before hanging it up.
