Derrick Johnson was born on November 22, 1982 in Waco, Texas, played college football at Texas, and was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs with the 15th pick in 2005. He started all 16 games as a rookie and made 96 tackles, a season Madden NFL 06 rated 84. On January 3, 2010 at Denver he returned two interceptions for touchdowns in a 44-24 win, two of the four interception returns for scores he recorded.

He started three games in 2009 before returning to a full-time role. Madden NFL 11 listed him at 76 for the 2010 season, in which he started every game and made 122 tackles. In 2011 he recorded a career-high 131 combined tackles with two interceptions and two sacks, and was named first-team All-Pro and to the first of four Pro Bowls.

Madden NFL 25 put him at 93 for 2013, the last of three straight Pro Bowl seasons. A torn Achilles tendon in the 2014 opener limited him to one game. He came back for 16 games and 116 tackles in 2015, a season that brought second-team All-Pro honors and a rating of 88 in Madden NFL 16, then ruptured the other Achilles tendon in December 2016. He played six games for Oakland in 2018 and retired with 1,171 tackles, 27.5 sacks and 14 interceptions.
