Miami's national champ who manned the Dolphins' right edge
Vernon Carey won a national title at the University of Miami in 2001, part of one of the deepest rosters college football has produced, then went home to play for the Dolphins. Miami took the 6-foot-5, 340-pound tackle 19th overall in 2004, and he stayed for all eight of his NFL seasons, making 107 starts.
Carey was durable and movable, lining up primarily at right tackle but also filling in at left tackle and right guard when the Dolphins needed it. His weight and length made him a natural in the run game, and he opened holes for a Miami rushing attack through the back half of the 2000s. His son, Vernon Carey Jr., took the family athletics to the hardwood, starring at Duke before reaching the NBA.
Madden charted his development across those Dolphins years, opening at a 74 in 2005 and rising to a 90 in the 2011 edition, his final NFL season, the game giving him its highest grade just as he walked away.
