Turned a missed field goal into the longest play ever
On November 13, 2005, San Francisco lined up for a 52-yard field goal on the final play of the first half, Joe Nedney came up short, and Nathan Vasher caught the ball nine yards deep in his own end zone. One hundred and eight yards later he was in the other end zone, having authored what was then the longest play in NFL history. It was the signature moment of a breakout year in which he intercepted eight passes to lead the NFC.
A fourth-round pick out of Texas in 2004, the 110th selection, Vasher earned a Pro Bowl nod for that 2005 season and became a fixture in Chicago's aggressive secondary. In Super Bowl XLI he drew the Marvin Harrison assignment and helped hold him in check. He played for the Bears through 2009, then had short stints with the Chargers and Lions, retiring with 17 career interceptions.
His Madden line rose and fell with his health. He started at 70 in the 2004 edition as a rookie, then vaulted to 90 in the 2006 game after his eight-pick season. The peak was a 92 in the 2007 release, and once injuries set in the number tumbled to the high 60s by the 2010 and 2011 editions.
