Aaron Brooks was born on March 24, 1976 in Newport News, Virginia, and is a second cousin of Michael and Marcus Vick. He played college football at Virginia, starting in 1997 and 1998. Green Bay drafted him in the fourth round, 131st overall, in 1999, and he spent that season third on the depth chart behind Brett Favre without taking a regular-season snap.
The Packers traded him to New Orleans before the 2000 season. He took over when Jeff Blake broke his foot in the team's 11th game, and on December 30, 2000 he threw four touchdown passes in a 31-28 wild-card win over the defending champion Rams, the first playoff victory in Saints history. Madden NFL 02 listed him at 78 for 2001, the year he threw for a career-best 3,832 yards with 26 touchdowns and 22 interceptions.
His most efficient season came in 2003, with an 88.8 passer rating and a 3-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio; Madden NFL 04 rated him 89, as did Madden NFL 05 for 2004. New Orleans benched him for Todd Bouman late in 2005 and released him. He signed with Oakland in March 2006, and Madden NFL 07 listed him at 84 for that season. He threw for 20,261 yards and 123 touchdowns in the NFL and was inducted into the New Orleans Saints Hall of Fame in 2014.
