Norman Hand Madden Career 1997-2005 - Peak 89 OVR

Norman Hand was a fifth-round pick in the 1995 draft out of Ole Miss, a wide-bodied interior defender who made his name clogging the middle in New Orleans. There he formed the heart of a run-stuffing line the locals called the Heavy Lunch Bunch alongside Grady Jackson and Martin Chase, and he helped push the Saints to the first playoff win in franchise history following the 2000 season. He was heavy enough to command double teams and light enough on his feet to celebrate with a shimmy he named the Big Wiggle. His travels also took him through San Diego, Miami, Seattle and a final stop with the Giants in 2004.

Hand died in May 2010 at 37 from hypertensive heart disease. His Madden line ran from a 27 on the 1996 rookie card up to an 86 in the 2000 edition, and after a small dip it topped out at an 89 in the 2003 edition, the years that matched his best work in the Superdome, before flattening to 85.
