The out-of-shape rookie who owned Miami's middle for eleven years
Tim Bowens arrived in the NFL out of shape and short on experience, with just nine college games at Ole Miss, then won 1994 Defensive Rookie of the Year by clogging the middle of Miami's line. Blockers could not move him. The Dolphins had taken him 20th overall that spring, and he stayed for all eleven of his pro seasons in Miami.
Listed north of 320 pounds, Bowens was a run defender first, the anchor who freed everyone else to chase the ball. He made Pro Bowls in 1998 and 2002 and later earned a place on the Dolphins' Honor Roll after retiring following the 2004 season.
His Madden line ran hot and cold: a 48 in the 1996 edition, an 89 by 2000, and a peak of 91 in the 2003 game, his last big number before the career wound down.
