Matt Vanderbeek was an honorable-mention Big Ten linebacker at Michigan State who went undrafted in 1990 and made a six-year career out of the thing that keeps undrafted linebackers employed, special teams. He signed with Indianapolis, led the Colts in special-teams tackles in 1992, then moved to Dallas, where his particular skill fit a contender that needed bodies flying down the field on coverage units.

The Madden cards treat him as what he was, a solid-tackling role player with no defensive profile to speak of. He sits at a 66 in Madden NFL 95, built on a 74 tackle rating, rises to a 69 the next year, then falls off a cliff to a 29 as his career wound down, the number tracking the short shelf life of a special-teams specialist.
