A four-star out of Greater Atlanta Christian in Norcross, Georgia, Nichols picked Tennessee over USC, Ohio State, Florida and Georgia, then took a winding path through the SEC and beyond. He spent two years at Tennessee, including a redshirt, before transferring to Arkansas, where he started at center, then moved again to SMU.In 2025 Nichols anchored the SMU interior on a College Football Playoff team, taking more than 520 pass-blocking snaps and 346 in the run game across thirteen games while allowing just six pressures.
