Draft Profile: Bio
LJ Martin grew up in El Paso, Texas, and starred at Canutillo High School. A three-star recruit and a top-40 running back nationally, according to 247Sports, he committed to Stanford but flipped to BYU on signing day in 2023 after David Shaw's tenure ended.Martin made five starts as a true freshman in 2023 and ran for more than 700 yards and seven touchdowns in 2024, when he was the offensive MVP of the Alamo Bowl. He broke out in 2025, running for 1,299 yards and 12 touchdowns and catching 36 passes for 251 yards, and he was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. He ran for a career-high 131 yards on eight carries against Portland State, and BYU reached the Big 12 title game, losing to Texas Tech. He has led BYU in rushing in each of his three seasons, and he turned down the NFL to return for his final season.
Martin, a business major and an offensive captain, opened 2026 strongly. He ran for 176 yards and three touchdowns at Colorado State, with 173 of them in the first half, including a 56-yard run on BYU's second play, and Kalani Sitake called him one of the best running backs in the country. He was hurt early in the 17-10 win over TCU with an ankle injury, missed the Iowa State and Notre Dame games and was still out as of 22 October. He has 344 yards and three touchdowns on 44 carries in four games for a BYU team that was 6-0.

- Forced 56 missed tackles on 238 carries in 2025
- Reliable receiver out of the backfield, with 36 catches in 2025
- Team captain who has led BYU in rushing three straight seasons
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Ankle injury against TCU has cost him at least two games
- Receiving work is mostly short, at about seven yards a catch
- Fumbled three times in 2024, a ball-security issue to watch
- Heavy 2025 workload adds wear for a fourth-year back
Scouting Report: Summary
Martin is a big, fast running back who carried BYU's offense in 2025. He ran for 1,299 yards and 12 touchdowns on 238 carries, forced 56 missed tackles and caught 36 passes, and he was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year. He has rare speed for a back with his size, runs through arm tackles and has led BYU in rushing in each of his three seasons, and he is an offensive captain. He started 2026 even stronger. He ran for 176 yards and three touchdowns at Colorado State, including a 56-yard run on BYU's second play, and he is averaging 7.8 yards a carry in four games. Kalani Sitake has called him one of the best running backs in the country, and his decision to turn down the NFL and return for his final season showed his commitment to the program, which rose to 6-0 and beat then-No. 2 Notre Dame without him.
However, his injury is the main concern. He hurt his ankle early in the win over TCU, missed the Iowa State and Notre Dame games and was still out as of 22 October, and teams will want to know whether he returns at full speed. His receiving work is mostly short, at about seven yards a catch in 2025, and he fumbled three times in 2024. His heavy workload in 2025 also adds wear for a back in his fourth season.
Overall, Martin is a productive, athletic back with a rare blend of size and speed and the three-down experience that NFL teams value. He projects as a fourth-round running back with the ceiling of a lead back in a zone scheme and the floor of a reliable rotational runner. His return from the ankle injury and how he finishes the season will be important for his draft position.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank
in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance.
For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.
*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
