Tua Tagovailoa was born on March 2, 1998, in Ewa Beach, Hawaii. He played college football at Alabama, where he was named offensive MVP of the College Football Playoff National Championship in January 2018, and the Miami Dolphins drafted him fifth overall in 2020. He started nine games as a rookie, and Madden NFL 21 rated him 73 for that 2020 season.

He became Miami's primary starter in 2021. He sustained a concussion against the Cincinnati Bengals on September 29, 2022, and finished that season leading the NFL in passer rating with 3,548 yards and 25 touchdowns in 13 games. Madden NFL 24 rated him 83 for 2023, when he started all 17 games and led the league with 4,624 passing yards, becoming the first Dolphins quarterback to do so since Dan Marino in 1992. He was selected to the Pro Bowl for that season.

Madden NFL 25 rated him 88 for 2024, his highest figure, in a year limited to 11 games. He threw for 2,660 yards with 20 touchdowns and 15 interceptions in 2025 and was benched for the final three games, and Madden NFL 26 rated him 82 for that season. Miami released him in March 2026, and he signed a one-year contract with the Atlanta Falcons on March 13, 2026. Through the 2025 season he had thrown for 18,166 yards with 120 touchdowns and 59 interceptions, all with the Dolphins.
