James Conner was born on May 5, 1995, in Erie, Pennsylvania, and attended McDowell High School there. At Pittsburgh he rushed for 1,765 yards and set an ACC record with 26 rushing touchdowns in 2014, when he was named ACC Player of the Year. He tore his MCL in the 2015 season opener and was diagnosed with Hodgkin lymphoma during his rehabilitation; he was cleared as cancer-free before the 2016 season. The Pittsburgh Steelers drafted him in the third round in 2017, 105th overall.
Conner opened the 2018 season as the Steelers' starter after Le'Veon Bell held out, and he rushed for 973 yards and 12 touchdowns in 13 games and was selected to the Pro Bowl; Madden NFL 19 listed that season at 73 overall. He signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 2021, scored 15 rushing touchdowns and made a second Pro Bowl, a season Madden NFL 22 rated 80.
He passed 1,000 rushing yards for the first time in 2023, finishing with 1,040 in 13 games, which Madden NFL 24 listed at 77. He played a career-high 16 games in 2024 and ran for 1,094 yards, a season Madden NFL 25 rated 83. A foot injury in Week 3 of the 2025 season against San Francisco required surgery and ended his year. Through the 2025 season he had 6,065 rushing yards, 60 rushing touchdowns and 289 receptions for 2,255 yards.
