The overlooked fifth-rounder who started Super Bowl 50
Jacksonville drafted Brandon Marshall in the fifth round in 2012, 142nd overall out of Nevada, and let him go inside two seasons. Denver claimed him, and the Broncos found a rangy, downhill inside linebacker who could cover ground sideline to sideline. He piled up 113 tackles in 2014 and became a fixture in one of the great modern defenses. He started at inside linebacker in Super Bowl 50, making five tackles as Denver throttled Carolina 24-10 in February 2016.
His card climbed with his snaps. He lingered in the low 60s through the 2012, 2013 and 2014 editions while he was still mostly a special-teamer, then leaped to an 84 in the 2015 edition and a career-best 90 in the 2016 edition, the year he was central to a championship front seven. In September 2016 he knelt during the national anthem to protest police brutality, one of the first players to follow Colin Kaepernick, and lost a local endorsement deal over it. He never made a Pro Bowl, but for a stretch in Denver he was as reliable as any linebacker in the league.
