Immense talent derailed off the field
Aldon Smith was one of the most naturally gifted pass rushers of his generation, exploding for sacks at a near-historic pace over his first two seasons and anchoring the fearsome San Francisco rush that reached a Super Bowl. In 2012 he had nineteen and a half sacks.
Madden jumped him to a 96 by the 2014 edition off that pace. A series of off-field legal and substance-related troubles then derailed him, a serious matter that should be stated plainly. At his brief height, he was as dangerous as almost anyone.
