The practice-squad center who ended up snapping to Drew Brees
De la Puente signed with San Francisco as an undrafted free agent out of California in 2008 and then spent two years as roster filler, waived and re-signed by the 49ers, Seahawks, Panthers, Chiefs and Cowboys before New Orleans stashed him on its practice squad in October 2010. His break came in 2011, when Jonathan Goodwin left and veteran replacement Olin Kreutz abruptly retired midseason, handing the job to a player almost nobody outside the building knew. He kept it.
Over the next three seasons he started 50 games and snapped the ball to Drew Brees during the most prolific stretch of that offense, including back-to-back 16-start years in 2012 and 2013. His Madden valuation reflected the rise from anonymity: a 63 in the 2011 edition, up to 80 the next year, and a high of 91 in the 2013 edition. He signed with Chicago in 2014 but an ankle injury cost him the season, and he finished in Washington in 2015.
