San Francisco traded up to grab Anthony Davis 11th overall in 2010, moving up from 13 with Denver to lock in the mauling Rutgers right tackle they wanted. He was a two-time first-team All-Big East pick who came in as a starter and stayed one, appearing in 72 games with 71 starts and manning the right edge of the line that carried the 49ers to Super Bowl XLVII, a 34-31 loss to Baltimore for the 2012 season.
What made his story unusual was the exit. In June 2015, still just 25, he stepped away for a year to let his brain and body heal, an early and honest acknowledgment of the toll the position takes. He came back in 2016, then retired again that September, and a 2019 reinstatement bid never produced another snap. Madden rated him a genuine anchor, reaching a 90 in the 2013 edition after the Super Bowl run and holding an 88 the following year. A powerful, mean right tackle who left more football on the table than most, by choice.
