JaMarcus Russell: LSU's No. 1 pick, three seasons in Oakland

JaMarcus Trenell Russell was born on August 9, 1985, in Mobile, Alabama, and played college football at LSU, winning the Manning Award in 2006 and MVP honors in the 2007 Sugar Bowl. The Oakland Raiders selected him first overall in the 2007 draft. He held out through training camp and signed on September 12, 2007, a six-year contract worth up to $68 million.

Russell first appeared on December 2, 2007, against Denver, completing four of seven passes for 56 yards, and he made his first start in the season finale against San Diego, going 23 of 31 for 224 yards. Madden NFL 08 listed him at 82 for 2007. He started all 15 games he played in 2008, throwing two touchdown passes in the opener against Denver and six touchdowns over the final three games; Madden NFL 09 raised him to 83 for that season.

Named the starter again in 2009, he was benched in November for Bruce Gradkowski and finished the year with the lowest passer rating, lowest completion percentage and fewest passing yards among qualifying NFL quarterbacks. Madden NFL 10 listed him at 72 for 2009. Oakland released him on May 6, 2010, and later workouts with Washington, Miami and Chicago did not produce a contract. Over 31 games he completed 354 of 680 passes for 4,083 yards, 18 touchdowns and 23 interceptions.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
