Jacob Bell was born on March 2, 1981 in Cleveland, Ohio, attended Saint Ignatius High School and started 38 games at Miami (OH), earning first-team All-MAC honors as a senior. The Tennessee Titans drafted him in the fifth round of the 2004 draft, 138th overall. He started 14 games at left guard as a rookie before tearing his right anterior cruciate ligament against Denver on December 25, 2004.
He played nine games with one start in 2005, the season Madden NFL 06 rated him 81. Bell started 15 games in 2006 and all 16 in 2007, a year Madden NFL 08 rated him 83 and Tennessee finished fifth in the NFL in rushing. On March 3, 2008 he signed a six-year contract with the St. Louis Rams worth $36 million, and Madden NFL 09 rated him 94 for that 2008 season, the highest figure of his career.
Bell started 13 games in each of his first two Rams seasons, all 16 in 2010, and 12 in 2011, when Madden NFL 12 rated him 87. He signed with the Cincinnati Bengals on April 6, 2012 and announced his retirement on May 8, citing fear of long-term brain damage after the death of Junior Seau. He finished with 109 NFL games and 100 starts.
