A young 49ers starting center who faded into a journeyman backup

Marcus Martin was a first-team All-Pac-12 center at USC, a third-round pick of the 49ers in 2014 who started eight games as a rookie when injury opened the job. For a moment he looked like a long-term starter, a young center handed the middle of an NFL line, and in 2015 he started thirteen more games at the position.

The Madden card peaked right there and then fell. It hit a 72 in Madden NFL 16 during his run as the 49ers starter, then slid into the 60s as he lost the job and became a journeyman backup, the number tracking a player whose early opportunity did not become a career. The grade reflected the reality that a starting job handed early is not always kept, the young center unable to hold what injury had given him.

He bounced through Cleveland, Dallas around 2017 and 2018, Seattle, Detroit and New England, mostly as depth, a toe injury among the things that slowed his Cowboys stint. Martin is a study in how fragile an early starting role can be, a young center who peaked at twenty-one and faded into a backup. The dip from a 72 into the 60s is the honest read on a career that started faster than it finished.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
