Thomas Morstead was born on March 8, 1986, in Houston, Texas, and grew up in Pearland. He punted and place-kicked at SMU, where he was a first-team All-Conference USA selection in 2007 and 2008. New Orleans drafted him in the fifth round, 164th overall, in 2009. As a rookie he executed the second-half onside kick, called Ambush, that the Saints recovered on the way to a 31-17 win over Indianapolis in Super Bowl XLIV.

He set an NFL record with 68 kickoff touchbacks in 2011. In 2012 he averaged 50.1 yards on 74 punts, was voted to the Pro Bowl and was named second-team All-Pro. Madden NFL 13 rated him 88 and Madden NFL 25 followed with a 94. Madden NFL 16 rated him 91 for the 2015 season. New Orleans released him in March 2021 after twelve seasons.

He punted for the Jets and the Falcons in 2021, Miami in 2022, and the Jets again in 2023 and 2024. He led the NFL in punts and punting yards in 2023, with 99 punts for 4,831 yards, and Madden NFL 24 rated him 79. He signed with San Francisco in May 2025 and had 44 punts for a 43.6-yard average that season.
