Jerry Porter was born on July 14, 1978 in Washington, D.C., played college football at West Virginia, and went to the Oakland Raiders in the second round of the 2000 draft, 47th overall. Madden NFL 2001 listed him at 78 for that rookie season, which brought one reception. He caught 19 passes in 2001, and Madden NFL 02 dropped him to 64.

Porter started 14 games in 2002 and caught 51 passes for 688 yards and nine touchdowns, adding three touchdowns in three playoff games as Oakland reached Super Bowl XXXVII. Madden NFL 04 put him at 85 for the 2003 season. He set a career high of 998 receiving yards in 2004 on 64 receptions with nine touchdowns, and caught 76 passes for 942 yards in 2005 alongside Randy Moss.

He asked for a trade during 2006 training camp and was deactivated by head coach Art Shell, who suspended him for conduct before the players' union got the ban cut to two games.
