Draft Profile: Bio
Francis Mauigoa, standing at 6'6" and weighing 315 pounds, is an offensive tackle from the University of Miami. Originally from 'Ili'ili, American Samoa, Mauigoa began his high school career at San Bernardino (Calif.) Aquinas before transferring to IMG Academy in Florida. At IMG, he showcased his versatility by starting at right tackle as a junior and switching to left tackle in his senior year. A consensus five-star recruit, he was ranked No. 5 overall in the ESPN300 and participated in the Under Armour All-America Game and the Polynesian Bowl. His older brother, Frederick, was a three-year starter at center for Washington State, highlighting a strong football lineage. In his true freshman season at Miami in 2023, Mauigoa started all 13 games at right tackle. His performance earned him All-ACC Honorable Mention and multiple Freshman All-America honors. He played a key role in an offensive line that was named to the midseason honor roll for the Joe Moore Award, which honors the nation's top unit. Mauigoa's contributions helped the Hurricanes achieve significant offensive outputs, including a season-high 532 yards against Boston College and 323 rushing yards at Temple.
Mauigoa's combination of size, strength, and athleticism made an immediate impact on Miami's offensive front. His ability to handle starting duties as a true freshman against high-level competition demonstrated his readiness and potential for continued growth.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Exceptional athleticism for his size, displaying rare movement skills and agility in both pass protection and run blocking
- Powerful drive blocker who consistently creates movement at the point of attack and opens lanes for ball carriers
- Impressive reach and wingspan - able to effectively engage and control defenders in pass protection
- Demonstrates advanced body control and balance for a young lineman, rarely overextending or losing his anchor
- Exhibits excellent lateral quickness and foot speed, enabling him to mirror speed rushers effectively
- Versatile player with experience at both tackle positions, increasing his value at the next level
- Shows a nasty streak and finish mentality in the run game, often driving defenders well past the whistle
- Explosive movement patterns uncommon for a player of his size.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Still raw in terms of technique, particularly in pass protection where he can struggle with hand placement and timing
- Occasionally relies too heavily on his athleticism, leading to lapses in fundamentals against more polished pass rushers
- Can improve consistency in recognizing and picking up stunts and blitzes in pass protection
- Sometimes plays with a high pad level, reducing his leverage and power in the run game
- May need to add functional strength to his frame to better anchor against bull rushes at the next level
Scouting Report: Summary
Mauigoa possesses a rare blend of size, power, and athleticism that has NFL scouts salivating. His inclusion on Bruce Feldman's "Freaks List" at No. 5 overall underscores his exceptional physical tools, including a staggering 270 pounds of lean muscle mass at just 20.9% body fat - unheard of for a true freshman lineman.Despite his youth, Mauigoa already displays the traits of a franchise cornerstone at tackle. His ability to seamlessly transition from high school to high-level college football suggests a steep developmental trajectory. With continued refinement of his technique and mental processing, Mauigoa has the ceiling of an All-Pro caliber blindside protector at the next level.
Mauigoa's versatility and scheme diversity make him an attractive prospect for various NFL offenses. His combination of power and agility allow him to excel in both gap and zone blocking schemes, while his pass protection upside projects him as a day one starter with Pro Bowl potential. Teams looking for a blue-chip tackle prospect will have Mauigoa firmly in their crosshairs come draft day.
