The Maniac from South Carolina State who led the NFL in tackles as a rookie
The Colts spent the 36th pick in 2018 on a linebacker from South Carolina State that most fans had never seen play, and Darius Leonard answered by leading the entire NFL in tackles as a rookie, 163 combined, then walking off with Defensive Rookie of the Year and a first-team All-Pro nod. Teammates called him the Maniac for the way he flew to the ball and ripped it loose. In 2019 he became the eighth player in league history to post five sacks and five interceptions in a season, and in 2021 he led the NFL with eight forced fumbles.
Madden was slow to trust the small-school kid, stamping him a 72 in the 2018 edition before the season changed everyone's mind. The number jumped to 84 the next year and kept rising to a 90 in the 2022 game, matching three first-team All-Pro selections and three straight Pro Bowls. In 2022 he asked to be known by his middle name, Shaquille. Back injuries eventually wore him down, and he retired as a Colt in 2025 with 614 tackles.
