Detroit's anchor who walked away at 29 on his own terms
In October 2020 Frank Ragnow fractured his throat during a game and kept snapping the ball, a detail that captures how completely Detroit leaned on him for seven seasons. The Lions drafted him 20th overall out of Arkansas in 2018, and he started all 96 games he ever played, moving between guard and center before settling in as one of the best pivots in football. He made four Pro Bowls (2020, 2022, 2023, 2024) and earned three second-team All-Pro nods.
His Madden climb reads like a patient build, from a rookie 76 in the 2018 edition up through an 88 in 2021 and finally a 93 in the 2024 game, released the same year he made his last Pro Bowl. Then he stopped. Ragnow retired in June 2025 at age 29, citing the toll on his body, and a brief comeback attempt that November collapsed when a Grade 3 hamstring strain failed his physical. He left near the top, which almost nobody at his position ever gets to do.
