Mark Fields was born on November 9, 1972 in Los Angeles, played linebacker at Washington State, where he was the Pac-10 Defensive Player of the Year in 1994, and was drafted 13th overall by the New Orleans Saints in 1995. He made the PFWA All-Rookie Team. Madden NFL 96 put him at a calculated 62 for the 1995 season.

Fields started 15 games in 1997 and had eight sacks, the most of any season in his career, and Madden NFL 98 gave him a calculated 82 for that year. He was selected to his first Pro Bowl after the 2000 season, his sixth and last in New Orleans; Madden NFL 2001 listed him at 88 for 2000. He spent 2001 with St. Louis and played in Super Bowl XXXVI, then signed with Carolina in 2002 and recorded 7.5 sacks.

Fields was diagnosed with Hodgkin's lymphoma before the 2003 season and sat out the year while Carolina reached Super Bowl XXXVIII. He returned in 2004, played 14 games with four sacks, and made his second Pro Bowl; Madden NFL 05 listed him at 87 for that season. The disease returned before the 2005 season, he turned down a new Carolina contract and retired, and the Pro Football Writers of America gave him the George Halas Award in 2005.
