Seth Joyner: 52 sacks, 24 interceptions, three Pro Bowls

Seth Joyner was born on November 18, 1964 in Spring Valley, New York and played college football at UTEP. The Philadelphia Eagles drafted him in the eighth round, 208th overall, in 1986; he was cut in training camp and re-signed later that season. He recorded 136 tackles in 1988 and 132 in 1990.

In 1991 he made 110 tackles, 6.5 sacks, three interceptions and six forced fumbles, was a first-team All-Pro selection of the Pro Football Writers Association and a second-team Associated Press pick, and was named NFL Player of the Year by Sports Illustrated's Paul Zimmerman. In a Monday night game against Houston that season he played with a 102-degree fever and had eight solo tackles, two sacks, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. Madden NFL 92 put him at a calculated 86 for 1991, and Madden NFL 93 at a calculated 99 for 1992, when he was again a second-team AP All-Pro.

Joyner went to Pro Bowls after the 1991, 1993 and 1994 seasons. Arizona signed him in 1994, and Madden NFL 95 listed him at a calculated 98 for that year. He reached Super Bowl XXXII with Green Bay in 1997 and won Super Bowl XXXIII with Denver on January 31, 1999, his final game. He played 195 games with 1,123 tackles, 52 sacks, 24 interceptions and 26 forced fumbles, and is a member of the Philadelphia Eagles Hall of Fame.

How to read these: Each row is the player’s rating in that year’s Madden, listed by the NFL season it covers (Madden NFL 2001 = the 2000 season). Madden sets its ratings before the season is played, so they reflect the previous season’s performance - a player’s breakout year tends to show up as a jump in the following year’s game.
About the starred rows*: Several early Madden releases rated players on a 1-15 scale, as printed in the game manuals, rather than the modern 0-99. We store those ratings converted to 0-99 (each manual point is about 6.6) so you can compare players across eras at a glance - use the 0-99 / 1-15 toggle above the table to see the original numbers on those seasons. EA didn’t publish an overall rating in those games, so the OVR* values for those years are our own calculation, the average of the player’s two best ratings.
Note: Some Madden releases tracked fewer attributes than others. Cells shown as - were not published by EA that year.
