The son of Arkansas-Pine Bluff head coach Alonzo Hampton, Ashton was a prolific two-way player at Florida State University High in Tallahassee, catching for nearly 1,800 yards and 21 scores while earning All-Big Bend Defensive Player of the Year. He signed with Clemson as a cornerback.He earned immediate playing time as a true freshman in 2024, starting four of fourteen games and posting 30 tackles with two interceptions, returning one for a touchdown.
Hampton started all thirteen games as a sophomore in 2025, recording 45 tackles, six pass breakups and an interception. He knocked away passes at a high clip from the boundary, drawing on the ball skills and hands that carried over from his receiver background in high school. The six breakups ranked among the ACC leaders, and he handled boundary duty across all thirteen games for a Clemson defense that leaned on his length.
