Draft Profile: Bio
The right tackle spot at Maryland needed a starter in 2024, and Alan Herron answered after two seasons at Division II Shorter University, where he started every game at left and right tackle across the 2022 and 2023 campaigns. Rated the No. 19 offensive tackle in the portal by On3, he drew more than 30 offers and picked the Terps over Penn State, Clemson, Miami, Auburn, and Syracuse.Herron started all 24 games during his two years in College Park, locking down right tackle from the day he arrived. In 2025, he anchored an offensive line that allowed just nine sacks all season, fifth fewest nationally and second in the Big Ten. He earned Honorable Mention All-Big Ten and Academic All-Big Ten honors, along with the George C. Cook Memorial Award as the senior with the highest GPA on the team.
His final stretch of college football included the Panini Senior Bowl, the American Bowl All-Star Game, and an invite to the 2026 NFL Scouting Combine.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Fires out of his stance with surprising quickness for a man his size on run plays.
- His 2025 pass sets looked nothing like 2024; the improvement week to week was visible.
- Keeps his inside hand active and placed well, rarely giving up clean wins across his face.
- Uses a snatch-trap counter that catches leaning rushers off guard and redirects their momentum.
- Moves bodies on down blocks and angle drives; real pop as the drive man on doubles.
- Wide enough through the trunk to wall off linebackers on second-level climbs.
- Never missed a start in four college seasons, including every snap at RT for Maryland.
- Showed flashes at the Senior Bowl of widening the corner against high-side moves in 1-on-1s.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Speed rushers bend the corner on him too easily; his set points don't expand enough.
- Long-arm sequences expose his chest and collapse his anchor into the pocket.
- Rolls onto his toes late in the drive phase of run blocks, losing power and control.
- Punch lands late and soft too often; rushers work through it with secondary effort.
- Run blocking on tape stays choppy even when his pass pro looks solid that same game.
- Shorter arms and lighter frame leave thin margins against NFL-caliber edge rushers.
Scouting Report: Summary
Herron's senior tape tells a different story than his junior tape, and that matters. In 2024, rushers were getting into his chest early and walking him back. By midseason 2025, his pass sets had more patience and his hand timing looked sharper, particularly in games against Washington and UCLA where he kept the pocket clean on the right side against quality edge players. He was not the same blocker in November that he was in August, and that trajectory is worth paying attention to.The run game is where the tape gets harder to watch. Even in games where his pass protection held up, his footwork on zone and drive blocks would fall apart. He rolls forward onto his toes and loses his base, which kills his ability to sustain through the whistle. Against Michigan, that showed up repeatedly. A gap-heavy scheme fits him better than outside zone, because his quickness off the ball and pop on down blocks and doubles are real. He can move people when he stays underneath them. The question is whether he can do it consistently enough.
The most likely path for Herron is as a developmental swing tackle who sits behind a starter and gets concentrated coaching on his hand timing and footwork. His frame is on the leaner side for the position, but the athleticism, the durability, and the in-season improvement all suggest a player whose ceiling has not been reached. Whether he gets there depends on how much technique he can absorb in a short window.
