Scouting Report: Strengths
- Big tall athlete with good bulk and a filled-out frame. Stays balanced and doesn't overextend in pass protection. Stays disciplined with good bend and leverage.
- Has quick light hands and quick instincts to mirror in pass protection
- Super experienced player with four years of starts under his belt as well as a huge total snap count of 2630!
- Duncan has long arms that allow him to survive as a pass protector on the edge, and Duncan typically plays with good balance.
- Has a prototypical build for an NFL tackle, with a wide frame and long arms. He’s a mauler in the run game, exploding off the snap and winning with leverage and upper-body strength at the point of attack.
- An impressive athlete who put up excellent numbers at the combine running a 5.1 forty and looked explosive jumping (94th percentile in the broad jump)
- Shows excellent ability as a pulling tackle as a run blocker - where he has a chance to showcase his speed and overall quickness
- In the run game, he plays with a mean streak and does a nice job generating a push at the initial point of attack. He can get outside and does a decent job landing blocks in space.
- He also flashes heavy hands and has the ability to knock back pass rushers. Duncan shows a mean streak as a run blocker, doing solid work on the second level.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- While he’s a quality athlete, he’s more comfortable moving forward as a run blocker than setting in pass protection, as Duncan too often relies solely on his initial punch to stand up pass rushers instead of moving his feet.
- Never been dominant as either a run or pass protector at the college level has only ever been just good. His production and numbers especially as a pass protector have been concerning over the last two years as surrendered 11 sacks and 41 total pressures
- His hands aren’t violent enough to stand pass rushers up early in the down, and often plays with poor balance.
- Plagued by choppy footwork and a tendency to set too high in pass protection. Duncan generally plays with poor balance, and he needs to improve core strength.
- As a run blocker, he’s quick off the line but often comes up too high; he struggles to generate movement at the point of attack.
Scouting Report: Summary
Jaelyn Duncan is an impressively athletic tackle who is equally experienced having started for four full years at Mayland. Despite having a wealth of experience as well as the requisite size for the position he's seemingly not progressed as a player as perhaps he should have. His play has been far from elite as he surrendered 11 sacks over the past two years. He'll most likely be drafted not for his current skill set but rather as a developmental prospect with an eye on turning his athletic ability into pro production.Expect Duncan to be selected as high as the third round due to his measurables but we consider him more of a fourth-round prospect in the 2023 NFL draft.
