Florida bottomed out at 4-8 (2-6 SEC) in 2025, a fourth losing season in five years, and the administration did not wait for it to finish. Billy Napier was fired in October with the Gators sitting at 3-4, closing a tenure that managed only one touchdown in five separate losses and left the offense languishing near the bottom of the country in yardage.

The rebuild belongs to Jon Sumrall, hired from Tulane at 43-12 over four seasons split between Troy and Tulane, with a trip to the conference title game in each of those years. The former Kentucky linebacker has already opened the checkbook: he brought innovative coordinator Buster Faulkner from Georgia Tech to run the offense, installed Brad White as defensive coordinator, and imported strength coach Rusty Whitt, a former Army Special Forces sergeant whose brutal offseason conditioning test earned the nickname "The Gauntlet." The one departure that reshaped the roster was quarterback DJ Lagway, who transferred to Baylor and cracked the job wide open.
