Michigan State Spartans 2026 Preview: Fitzgerald Takes Over a Portal-Built Rebuild

Michigan State finished 4-8 (1-8 Big Ten) in 2025, closing a second straight losing season with a 38-28 win over Maryland that spared it a winless league record. The defining story is another reset: Pat Fitzgerald arrives as the program's third head coach in seven seasons, three years after a hazing scandal ended his 17-year Northwestern tenure (110-101), a firing he later sued over and settled. He inherits a roster stripped by the transfer portal, which shipped out more than 40 players, and a staff that pairs the return of coordinator Joe Rossi with fresh energy elsewhere. This is a rebuilding year in every sense, and the Spartans assembled much of the two-deep through the portal.
