Chip Kelly, a New Ryan Field and a Loaded Secondary: Northwestern's 2026 Reset

Northwestern went 7-6 and 4-5 in the Big Ten in 2025, closing the year with a 34-7 rout of Central Michigan in the GameAbove Sports Bowl for a third bowl trip in four seasons under David Braun, now 19-19 across three years in Evanston. The defining offseason move was the hiring of veteran offensive coordinator Chip Kelly, the 62-year-old former UCLA and NFL head coach who most recently ran the Ohio State offense that won a national title. His charge is reviving a unit that has not finished above 93rd nationally in scoring since 2017 and has averaged barely 21 points a game over the past decade. The other headline is bricks and mortar: the $862 million rebuilt Ryan Field opens October 2 against Penn State, a signal that the program is finally spending to chase the upper half of the league.
