Draft Profile: Bio
Malik Spencer from Buford High School was rated a 3-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 3-star grade by 247 Sports. Following high school, Spencer opted to join Michigan State. In 2022 as a freshman Spencer saw action in 4 games and played a total of 56 snaps at cornerback for the Spartans. He recorded just one tackle, 3 assists, while adding one stop. In coverage Spencer notched up no pass breakups, no interceptions, and QB rating when targetted of 80.2.
As a sophomore in 2023 he played in 12 games and logged 634 snaps for the Spartans. He made solid 51 tackles, 16 assists, and had 16 stops. In coverage he totaled 4 pass breakups, no interceptions, and a disapointing QB rating when targetted of 117.6.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Instincts are outstanding, and Spencer does an excellent job in route recognition.
- Great on route recognition and has click-and-close ability
- Shows good instincts when facing the action in zone coverage, and he has solid ball skills.
- Can get up under a receiver’s chin and has the speed to flip his hips and run downfield. Spencer has the quick and surprisingly powerful hands to jostle receivers early. But he’s at his best peeking into the backfield.
- He’s a willing and capable hitter in run support and closes fast to make plays against quick screens.
- He’s excellent in run support, a physical hitter who could also get a look at safety
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Like a lot of collegiate corners, Spencer has a tendency to get grabby, something that will have to be coached out of him.
- Isn’t great in route recognition when he’s facing the action, is hesitant and susceptible to double moves, and too often gets unnecessarily handsy when playing trail position
- Better in press coverage than in off coverage, when he can look shaky and unsure when transitioning out of his backpedal. He’ll give up throws underneath.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank
in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance.
For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.
*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
