Vicari Swain played mostly safety at Central High School in Carrollton, Georgia, also lining up at receiver and returning punts. On3 rated him a four-star athlete and the No. 204 player in his class, and he enrolled at South Carolina in 2023.Swain played in all 13 games as a redshirt freshman in 2024, logging 314 snaps and a strip sack against Kentucky. He missed most of the 2025 offseason because of academic issues before rejoining the team in the summer, then became a starter at corner and one of the most dangerous returners in the country. He returned a punt 80 yards for a touchdown in the opener against Virginia Tech and two more for scores against South Carolina State the next week, a school first for a single game. He finished with two interceptions and five pass breakups and was a third-team All-SEC pick as a returner.
Swain stayed at South Carolina for 2026 and returned two more punts for touchdowns against Towson, including a 58-yarder. He had a sack against Mississippi State and intercepted a pass in the win at Florida, and he has played every game at corner for a 5-3 team. South Carolina secondary coach Torrian Gray once called him an absolute stud of an athlete who can make plays on both sides of the ball.

Swain is a twitchy, aggressive defensive back and one of the most dangerous punt returners in the country. He has scored five times on returns since the start of 2025, including two in one game against South Carolina State and two more against Towson this season, and his speed and acceleration show up in coverage too, where he drives on throws and closes in a hurry. His background as a high school safety and receiver gives him natural ball skills.He has made plays on defense as well. He had two interceptions and five pass breakups in 2025, and this fall he sacked the Mississippi State quarterback and intercepted a pass in the win at Florida. He has played every game at corner for a 5-3 team, and he is willing to come up and tackle near the line. He has played more than 50 snaps in five of eight games, a full-time role.
However, his coverage has been inconsistent this season. He has allowed 20 catches on 29 targets with two touchdowns, he has been flagged six times, including three times against Tennessee, and he has missed five tackles.
