Draft Profile: Bio
Matt Rose comes from a football family in Brecksville, Ohio, where his brother Mike played linebacker at Iowa State, another brother played at Hillsdale and his grandfather played at Notre Dame. A first-team All-Ohio selection who set his school's solo tackle record and also starred in basketball, he chose Stanford, where he studies management science and engineering.

Rose redshirted in 2022 and spent 2023 as a special teams regular before making his first career start in the 2024 upset of Louisville. He broke out in 2025, starting 11 games and finishing second in the ACC with 106 tackles, the most by a Cardinal player since 2015, plus three sacks and eight tackles for loss. His 14-tackle effort in the Big Game against Cal capped a second-team All-ACC season.

Back for a fifth year, Rose has 38 tackles through four games in 2026, including 11 tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss in the 34-27 win over Georgia Tech.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Run defense is his strength: reads quickly, triggers downhill and fills with force
  • Tackle machine who finished second in the ACC with 106 tackles in 2025
  • Career day in the 2025 Big Game against Cal, with 14 tackles
  • Smart, experienced three-year contributor from a deep football family
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Tackling has been a recurring issue, with 15 misses in 2025 and nine more this fall
  • Coverage trails his run defense, with 19 catches allowed on 22 targets in 2026
  • Opponents target him in the passing game, with five touchdowns allowed since 2025
  • Limited value as a blitzer, with one sack through four games
  • Projects mainly as a run-down linebacker without a clear third-down role
Scouting Report: Summary
Rose is the kind of linebacker who makes a defense function, a sharp, well-prepared tackler who finished second in the ACC in stops last season despite playing behind a front that struggled to keep blockers off him. He reads plays quickly, fills downhill with conviction and rarely looks lost, and his best games, like the 14-tackle afternoon against Cal last November and his 11-tackle effort in this year's win over Georgia Tech, show how much ground he can cover when he is kept clean.

However, the tape this season has exposed his limitations. He has missed nine tackles in four games after 15 misses last season, so the issue is not new, and opponents have attacked him in coverage, completing 19 of 22 throws in his direction, including two touchdowns in the opener against Hawaii. He does not add much as a blitzer, so he projects as a run-down player rather than a three-down linebacker.

Overall, Rose is an intelligent, productive linebacker whose instincts and work ethic will earn him a training camp invitation. Expect him to go late or sign right after the draft; he projects as a seventh-round to priority free agent linebacker who would bring smarts and toughness to a special teams room.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
