Following high school, Mathews Jr. opted to join Ohio State after being heavily recruited.In 2023 as a freshman Mathews Jr. saw action in 8 games and played a total of 192 snaps at cornerback for the Buckeyes. Scouting Report: Strengths
- Plays with the natural balance and ultra-quick feet to mirror underneath, and he’s tremendous at reading routes and reading quarterbacks.
- Tracks the ball well and has the natural ball skills for forcing turnovers.
- He’ll line up in press at times, where Mathews has a quick and powerful punch. His ball skills are good, and he plays with an extremely confident and competitive demeanor.
- Plays the ball as if it was thrown for him, showing burst back to the ball as well as good timing for the jump ball.
- Has the change-of-direction ability to mirror underneath but did solid work out of press and off coverage.
- Shows the click-and-close ability to backpedal and the ball skills to make plays. Mathews has loose hips to go along with good top-end speed, and he can flip around to turn and run in coverage.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Inconsistent getting off of blocks. Can be a step slow to react when a quarterback comes back to his side of the field late in progression.
- Mathews runs well, but Mathews doesn’t have elite recovery speed.
- He’ll draw plenty of flags early on with his playing style. Mathews is hesitant when facing the action in zone coverage.
