Cameron Calhoun from Winton Woods High School was rated a 3-star recruit by ESPN and handed a 4-star grade by 247 Sports. Following high school, Calhoun opted to join Michigan after being heavily recruited.In 2023 as a freshman Calhoun saw action in just 2 games and played a total of 13 snaps at cornerback for the Wolverines. He recorded no tackles, no assists, while adding no stops. In coverage Calhoun notched up no pass breakups, no interceptions, and an outstanding QB rating when targetted of .0.
After the end of the season he transferred to Utah where as a sophomore for the Utes in 2024 Calhoun played in just 3 games and logged 90 snaps for the Utes. He made only 4 tackles, 2 assists, and had 2 stops. In coverage he totaled one pass breakup, one interception, and an outstanding QB rating when targetted of 24.7.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- His length and leaping ability allow him to high-point the ball and make plays. Calhoun would have had bigger interception numbers in college had opposing quarterbacks not gone out of their way to avoid him.
- Explodes out of his backpedal and has the hands and coordination to force interceptions.
- Effective out of the slot, showing the instincts and quickness to mirror when the receiver has a two-way go. He has good instincts and awareness when playing off, showing good route recognition and anticipation when breaking on the ball.
- Flashes good ball skills. He has the fluidity and change-of-direction ability to mirror quicker receivers underneath.
- He’s tall-framed with long arms to match. With his powerful hands, straight-line speed, and fluidity in his hips, turning and chasing downfield shouldn’t be a problem.
- Top-end speed is good and is capable of turning and running in press coverage. Calhoun also shows good instincts when sitting back in zone and looking into the backfield.
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Susceptible to double moves, though that could be coached out of him. But the problem is that Calhoun doesn’t track the ball downfield, and he seems to lack the ball skills to break up plays.
- Feet aren’t ideal, as he gets sloppy in his backpedal and can be sluggish when transitioning to close on the ball.
- Neither his size nor his straight-line speed would be considered elite
