Draft Profile: Bio
Gerald Mincey has taken a winding path through the SEC, playing for Florida, Tennessee, and now Kentucky. The 6'6", 338-pound tackle originally committed to Kentucky out of high school before flipping to Florida. After redshirting in 2020, he saw action in 10 games as a reserve in 2021. Mincey then transferred to Tennessee, where he started 13 games over two seasons. At Cardinal Gibbons High School in Fort Lauderdale, Mincey was a three-star recruit who helped lead his team to a state championship as a junior. His college career has been marked by steady improvement, going from a redshirt year to a reserve role to eventually earning starting jobs. In 2023 at Tennessee, Mincey started 6 games and allowed only 2 sacks in 510 snaps.
Off the field, Mincey has shown academic success, making the SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll in 2022. He's also displayed a creative side, with interests in cooking and poetry. Mincey cites "nobody cares, work hard" as the best advice he's received - a mentality that has likely fueled his journey through multiple SEC programs.
Scouting Report: Strengths
- Prototypical OT frame at 6'6" with a road-grader build and bulldozing play strength
- Explosive first step out of his stance with a powerful kick-slide to gain depth rapidly
- Anvil-heavy hands that shock defenders on initial contact, disrupting rush angles
- Demolition-crew mentality as a run blocker, creating significant push on down blocks
- Tone-setter who plays through the whistle and looks to plant defenders in the turf
- Position flexibility with starting experience at both tackle spots in the SEC gauntlet
- Ascending talent with a clear developmental arc from redshirt to SEC starter
- Brings a chip on his shoulder attitude, not afraid to mix it up verbally or physically
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
- Hand technique needs refinement; often engages wide, allowing defenders into his chest
- Limited lateral agility and recovery quickness, vulnerable to speed rushers turning the corner
- Susceptible to oversetting in pass pro, creating inside rush lanes for counters and stunts
- Tends to play with high pad level, compromising leverage and balance in both phases
- Outspoken nature, including taking shots at former team, may need channeling at the next level
Scouting Report: Summary
Gerald Mincey brings a blend of size and power to the offensive tackle position. His road-grader frame and mauler mentality in the run game will appeal to teams looking to establish a smash-mouth identity up front. Mincey's ability to create vertical displacement and finish blocks with nastiness could make him an asset in short-yardage and goal-line situations from day one. However, Mincey's technical inconsistencies and athletic limitations raise questions about his ability to handle edge speed at the next level. His tendency to overset and struggle with inside counters will need significant refinement. While his experience across multiple SEC programs demonstrates adaptability, Mincey's pass protection skills require considerable development before he can be trusted to protect NFL quarterbacks consistently.
Ultimately, Mincey profiles as a developmental prospect with the potential to carve out a role as a swing tackle or potential starter in a run-heavy scheme. His physical tools and nasty demeanor provide a solid foundation, but his draft stock will hinge on his ability to showcase improved technique and consistency during the pre-draft process. Teams will need to weigh his upside against his current limitations when considering him on draft day.
