Draft Profile: Bio
Carnell Tate, a true sophomore wide receiver from Ohio State, has quickly established himself as one of the most promising young talents in college football. Born on January 19, 2005, in Chicago, Tate's journey to Columbus was marked by impressive performances at both Marist High School and IMG Academy. As a five-star recruit and the No. 7 overall prospect in the 2023 class according to Rivals.com, Tate arrived at Ohio State with sky-high expectations.

In his freshman season, Tate appeared in all 13 games for the Buckeyes, including a start in the Goodyear Cotton Bowl. He finished the year with 18 receptions for 264 yards and one touchdown, surpassing the freshman year totals of recent Ohio State greats like Chris Olave, Marvin Harrison Jr., and Jaxon Smith-Njigba. Tate's best performance came against Purdue, where he hauled in three receptions for 79 yards, including a long gain of 55 yards.

Despite facing personal tragedy with the loss of his mother in July 2023, Tate has shown remarkable resilience and focus on the field. His ability to contribute immediately in a loaded Ohio State receiving corps speaks volumes about his talent and potential as he continues to develop.
Scouting Report: Strengths
  • Plus-plus body control and natural hops, allowing him to high-point contested catches despite his slender frame
  • Ankle-breaker in his routes, showcasing impressive sink-and-explode ability out of his breaks
  • Elite level hands when tracking deep balls, projecting as a home run threat at the next level
  • Swiss Army knife receiver, capable of lining up in the slot or outside the numbers
  • Space eater against zone coverage, consistently finding soft spots and presenting a target
  • Road grader mentality as a blocker, showing willingness to do the dirty work downfield
  • Ahead of the curve in terms of collegiate production, flashing playmaker potential early in his career
Scouting Report: Weaknesses
  • Stringbean build may struggle to defeat press coverage at the next level, needs to hit the weight room
  • Not a true burner, lacks elite straight-line speed to consistently take the top off defenses
  • Route tree could use more branches, occasionally rounds off breaks and tips his hand
  • May face a learning curve adapting to NFL route concepts and defensive disguises
Scouting Report: Summary
The tape doesn't lie - Tate has the makings of a chain-mover at the next level. His ability to create separation with savvy route-running and snag balls in traffic will have offensive coordinators salivating. The kid's got Sunday skills written all over him, with the versatility to line up all over the formation and stress defenses at every level.

While he may not have the jets to burn rubber past NFL corners, Tate's craftiness and body control should allow him to carve out a role early in his pro career. His willingness to stick his nose in as a blocker and contribute in the run game will earn him snaps right out of the gate. As he continues to fill out his frame and expand his route tree, Tate has the potential to develop into a quarterback's best friend - a reliable target who can move the sticks and make plays when it counts.

Scheme fit will be crucial for maximizing Tate's potential at the next level. Teams running spread concepts that emphasize option routes and yards after catch should have Tate circled on their draft boards.

*Percentile Ranking in Player's Position Group (NFL Combine Historical Data): This percentile reflects how a player's specific statistics rank in comparison to historical performances at the NFL Combine, specifically within their position group. A higher percentile indicates a better performance. For instance, being in the 90th percentile for a particular stat means the player outperformed 90% of their peers in that category.

*Similarity Percentage: This percentage is calculated based on a comprehensive analysis of various factors, including height, weight, 40-yard dash times, on-field performance statistics, and overall player rating. The analysis is conducted against our database of draft prospects from 2021 to 2023. This similarity score helps in evaluating how closely a current prospect aligns with past prospects. It is important to note, however, that this score reflects similarities based on college production and attributes, and does not account for eventual success or performance in the NFL.
